Grade 5 English Language Arts (US): what's taught and how to help

Grade 5 children in the US are usually aged 10–11 and are working on three main things in reading and writing, following the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. This guide explains each one in plain English, with something to try at home and practice prompts you can use today.

What Grade 5 focuses on

Correlative Conjunctions

Curriculum reference: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.1

Using paired linking words such as 'either ... or' and 'neither ... nor'.

Try at home
Ask your child to make choices with 'either ... or' sentences about dinner or weekend plans.

Opinion Writing With Logically Ordered Reasons

Curriculum reference: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.1

Writing an opinion piece whose reasons follow a sensible order and are linked clearly.

Try at home
Number the reasons in order of strength and check the piece follows that order.

Quoting Accurately When Explaining the Text

Curriculum reference: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.1 / RI.5.1

Copying short pieces from a text exactly and using them to explain what the text says.

Try at home
Ask for one short, exact quote that proves an answer, written inside quotation marks.

How much should they write?

A good target for a primary years piece at this level is one or two short paragraphs, which is about 250 words when practising in LiteracyLab AI. Short and regular beats long and rare: one carefully improved piece teaches more than three rushed ones.

Three practice prompts to try this week

  1. Write the first paragraph of an adventure story that starts with a surprise.
  2. Explain how to make your favourite snack so a friend could follow it.
  3. Write a story about a day when everything went wrong, and how it ended.

Common questions

How much should a Grade 5 child write?

One or two short paragraphs, or about 250 words is a sensible target for practice. Quality matters more than length.

What are the main skills at this level?

Correlative Conjunctions; Opinion Writing With Logically Ordered Reasons; Quoting Accurately When Explaining the Text. Each is explained above with something to try at home.

How do I know if my child is on track?

Compare their writing with the three focus areas above and ask their teacher for a view. A tool such as LiteracyLab AI can show, for each piece, what worked and the next step, but your child's teacher knows their progress best.

How to give feedback at home

Get feedback on Grade 5 writing

LiteracyLab AI reads a child's own writing and gives specific feedback: what worked, one thing to try next, and a corrected version, matched to their year and curriculum. The Free plan includes 3 pieces a month and needs no card.
