Grade R to Grade 3 English (Home Language) (South Africa): what's taught

Grade R to Grade 3 children in South Africa are usually aged 5–10 and are working on three main things in reading and writing, following the CAPS English curriculum and the National Senior Certificate (NSC). This guide explains each one in plain English, with something to try at home and practice prompts you can use today.

What Grade R to Grade 3 focuses on

Writing Simple Sentences & Using Full Stops

Curriculum reference: CAPS English · Writing & Presenting · Foundation Phase (Grades R-3)

Writing short, complete sentences that begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.

Try at home
Ask your child to write two or three sentences about a picture, then check each has a capital letter and a full stop.

Writing About Experiences & Ideas

Curriculum reference: CAPS English · Writing & Presenting · Foundation Phase (Grades R-3)

Putting their own experiences, feelings and ideas into words on the page, in a few connected sentences.

Try at home
After something fun, ask your child to write or draw and caption what happened and how they felt.

Understanding & Talking About Texts

Curriculum reference: CAPS English · Reading & Viewing · Foundation Phase (Grades R-3)

Listening to or reading a short text and saying what it was about, who was in it and what they thought of it.

Try at home
Read a picture book together and ask, 'What was your favourite part, and why?'

How much should they write?

A good target for a early years piece at this level is just a few short sentences, which is about 10 to 70 words when practising in LiteracyLab AI. Short and regular beats long and rare: one carefully improved piece teaches more than three rushed ones.

Three practice prompts to try this week

  1. What did you do at the weekend? Write three things you did.
  2. Write a sentence about something that makes you happy.
  3. Describe your best toy using three describing words.
