4th Class English (Ireland): what children learn and how to help

4th Class children in Ireland are usually aged 9–10 and are working on three main things in reading and writing, following the Irish English curricula: the Primary Language Curriculum, Junior Cycle English and Leaving Certificate English. This guide explains each one in plain English, with something to try at home and practice prompts you can use today.

What 4th Class focuses on

Writing for Different Purposes & Audiences

Curriculum reference: Primary Language Curriculum · Writing · 4th Class

Choosing a form that fits the job, such as a story, a letter, instructions or a report, and writing it for a particular reader.

Try at home
Ask your child to write a short note, then a set of instructions, and talk about how the two read differently.

Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation

Curriculum reference: Primary Language Curriculum · Writing · 4th Class

Spelling common words correctly, using the right grammar, and punctuating sentences so they read clearly.

Try at home
Each week pick five words your child often gets wrong, and have them use each in a sentence of their own.

Understanding & Responding to Texts

Curriculum reference: Primary Language Curriculum · Reading · 4th Class

Making sense of what they read and giving their own response, with a reason taken from the text.

Try at home
After a chapter, ask, 'What did you think of that, and which part made you think so?'

How much should they write?

A good target for a primary years piece at this level is one or two short paragraphs, which is about 140 words when practising in LiteracyLab AI. Short and regular beats long and rare: one carefully improved piece teaches more than three rushed ones.

Three practice prompts to try this week

  1. Should children have a longer lunch break? Give two reasons.
  2. Write the first paragraph of an adventure story that starts with a surprise.
  3. Explain how to make your favourite snack so a friend could follow it.

Common questions

How much should a 4th Class child write?

One or two short paragraphs, or about 140 words is a sensible target for practice. Quality matters more than length.

What are the main skills at this level?

Writing for Different Purposes & Audiences; Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation; Understanding & Responding to Texts. Each is explained above with something to try at home.

How do I know if my child is on track?

Compare their writing with the three focus areas above and ask their teacher for a view. A tool such as LiteracyLab AI can show, for each piece, what worked and the next step, but your child's teacher knows their progress best.

How to give feedback at home

Get feedback on 4th Class writing

LiteracyLab AI reads a child's own writing and gives specific feedback: what worked, one thing to try next, and a corrected version, matched to their year and curriculum. The Free plan includes 3 pieces a month and needs no card.
