2nd Class English (Ireland): what children learn and how to help

2nd Class children in Ireland are usually aged 7–8 and are working on three main things in reading and writing, following the Irish English curricula: the Primary Language Curriculum, Junior Cycle English and Leaving Certificate English. This guide explains each one in plain English, with something to try at home and practice prompts you can use today.

What 2nd Class focuses on

Writing Simple Sentences & Using Full Stops

Curriculum reference: Primary Language Curriculum · Writing · 2nd Class

Writing short, complete sentences that begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.

Try at home
Ask your child to write two or three sentences about a picture, then check each has a capital letter and a full stop.

Writing About Experiences & Ideas

Curriculum reference: Primary Language Curriculum · Writing · 2nd Class

Putting their own experiences, feelings and ideas into words on the page, in a few connected sentences.

Try at home
After something fun, ask your child to write or draw and caption what happened and how they felt.

Understanding & Talking About Texts

Curriculum reference: Primary Language Curriculum · Reading · 2nd Class

Listening to or reading a short text and saying what it was about, who was in it and what they thought of it.

Try at home
Read a picture book together and ask, 'What was your favourite part, and why?'

How much should they write?

A good target for a early years piece at this level is just a few short sentences, which is about 60 words when practising in LiteracyLab AI. Short and regular beats long and rare: one carefully improved piece teaches more than three rushed ones.

Three practice prompts to try this week

  1. What did you do at the weekend? Write three things you did.
  2. Write a sentence about something that makes you happy.
  3. Describe your best toy using three describing words.

Common questions

How much should a 2nd Class child write?

Just a few short sentences, or about 60 words is a sensible target for practice. Quality matters more than length.

What are the main skills at this level?

Writing Simple Sentences & Using Full Stops; Writing About Experiences & Ideas; Understanding & Talking About Texts. Each is explained above with something to try at home.

How do I know if my child is on track?

Compare their writing with the three focus areas above and ask their teacher for a view. A tool such as LiteracyLab AI can show, for each piece, what worked and the next step, but your child's teacher knows their progress best.

How to give feedback at home

Get feedback on 2nd Class writing

LiteracyLab AI reads a child's own writing and gives specific feedback: what worked, one thing to try next, and a corrected version, matched to their year and curriculum. The Free plan includes 3 pieces a month and needs no card.
